Start your blog in one of these blog hosting platforms. they are free and nice to start with. I would recommend Blogger to you as its easy to start with and you get freedom to select any third party template.

My Blog www.buckstoblog.com is also a blogger blog and I have used my own template rather than using blogger's template. 

One more advantage with blogger is getting good place in search results. As you know, blogger is a Google product which is also the biggest advantage for it.

If your blog is on blogger, your postings will get higher rankings in google search than the same post on any other platform. You can try it by choosing an exceptional topic and write a blog post on it so that when you search for it, you get your post on front page of the search. Do the same posting on blooger blog and on any other of your choice. See the difference.
